Why do the 3 mm filaments have a diameter of 2.85 mm?

Here, an outdated name has prevailed. Today, 3 mm filaments usually have a diameter of 2.85 mm. Earlier they actually were made with a 3 mm diameter thickness. The dimensions have been gradually replaced by the new standard of 2.85 mm. The term of 3 mm however remained.
